Scrapbooking 101

Scrapbooking is the art of preserving mementos and photos, combining them with text and other embellishments to create a memory book. Scrapbooking allows people to preserve memories for future generations and it is a creative and artistic outlet for many.

Modern scrapbooking began in the 1980s with Marielen Wadley Christensen who envisioned a way to use her hobby to preserve photographs and mementos that were often lost or forgotten in boxes or folders. Marielen designed pages using photos, paper and embellishments to record her family history. Her pages were then inserted into sheet protectors and compiled in 3-ring binders. She later published a how-to booklet titled “Keeping Memories Alive.”

There are many different types of scrapbooking. Some people follow a specific theme, others work on individual page ideas, and still other people use scrapbooking to document everyday life. Whichever way you choose to scrapbook, you are bound to find the hobby rewarding and fun!

Whether you are working on a specific themed album or a collection of individual pages, it is important to start with a list of the stories you want to tell. Write a few keywords and brief descriptions to help you narrow down your options. Using this list as a guide can save you time and help you achieve a well-organized and eye-pleasing layout.

Once you have a list of story ideas, consider the photos that best capture each moment. When choosing photos, crop them to focus on the primary subject and avoid blurry or dark images. Also, consider the size of the photos and if you would like to mat them. Matting can draw the eye to the photo and add a nice decorative touch. Lastly, decide if you would like to include any additional text. Captions can help identify a photo and describe the scene or people in it. Journal blocks can be hand-written or typed on the computer, depending on your personal preference.
