Scrapbooking 101

scrapbooking

Scrapbooking is a hobby that involves creating a book with a variety of embellishments, photographs and memorabilia to document a moment in time. It can be done in traditional, digital or hybrid format. It has become very popular as a way to organize memories and create a personal memento or gift. It also allows people to socialize with friends and family while creating a layout.

The popularity of scrapbooking increased in the mid-2000s and it has grown into a $2.5 billion industry with 1,600 companies making scrapbooking products. Many different materials can be used in the creation of a scrapbook including photo paper, cardstock, a variety of adhesives, ribbon, washi tapes, wood veneers, journaling cards and die cuts. Some scrappers choose to have a particular color theme or collection of supplies they use with each layout while others prefer to be more eclectic.

A key element of a scrapbook is the journaling that is written about the photos and other memorabilia on a page. Journaling can be handwritten or typed and can describe the event, relate feelings and emotions or include quotes from those involved. Journaling can be as simple or as detailed as the scrapper wishes.

Before starting a scrapbook it is important to consider the “WHY” of the project. Does the goal of the project focus on a specific event or does it focus more on telling a story about the people and things captured in the photos? This will determine how the scrapbook is made and what products are used.
