Scrapbooking 101

Scrapbooking is a craft and art form that combines memorabilia and photographs in a creative way. It can be used to document a particular event, an overall theme or the everyday happenings of one’s life. It is a great way to preserve memories that would otherwise be lost or forgotten, and it is also fun to do. Many people use the opportunity to exercise their artistic talents while creating scrapbook pages, resulting in a beautiful finished product.

The earliest forms of scrapbooking were commonplace books or friendship albums. These were a place to collect memorabilia and photographs in a book, with notes or written descriptions. Mark Twain carried such a book with him as he traveled, and he would often include photos, drawings, newspaper clippings, letters, receipts and other mementos in his scrapbooks.

A modern scrapbook typically takes the form of an album with acid-free pages. The pages can be either 12 inch (30 cm) square or letter-size (A4 or US Letter). The albums can be plastic or paper, and many scrappers use clear page protectors to protect their work from spills, tears or stains.

Various embellishments and motifs are used to decorate each scrapbook page. Often, the style will be based on the overall theme of the scrapbook. For example, a birthday scrapbook will have more festive decorations than a holiday scrapbook.

Some basic materials needed for scrapbooking are photo corners, scissors, a paper trimmer or cutting tool, a selection of art pens and archival pens for journaling, and mounting glues like thermo-tac. Specialty tools for scrapbooking include decorative scissors, paper punches, stencils and die cut machines.
