Scrapbooking – The Art of Preserving and Recording Memories

Scrapbooking is the art of preserving and recording memories with a combination of photos, memorabilia and decorative materials. Creating a scrapbook is a creative, artistic and therapeutic hobby that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

It is an activity that can be done in the privacy of one’s own home, or in a group setting such as a scrapbooking class. A scrapbook can be created on any size page; however, the most common are 12″x12″ and 8.5″x11″. There is no need to feel intimidated or overwhelmed by the number of different techniques that may be shown in magazines or online; it is really an exercise in creativity that allows for the creation of one’s own style and way of preserving memories.

Step 1: Choose a theme. This will help you to determine the direction of your album. If the album is to be a specific story such as your baby’s first year, you will want to choose a few photos each month to highlight and include in the scrapbook.

If the theme is a certain trip or event, you can break the experience down into pages for each individual day of the journey. This will help to keep the memory alive for future generations.

Once you have your photos and memorabilia, it is time to start to put them together. It is important to use acid-free glue for gluing photos and other embellishments. It is also a good idea to mat your pictures; this will draw the reader’s eye to the photo and add a decorative touch.
