How to Get Started in Scrapbooking

Scrapbooking is a popular hobby that can tap your most creative side while also preserving precious memories. In addition to traditional paper-and-sticker pages, there are also products such as Project Life that offer a simplified approach to memory keeping that involves binders and pre-printed inserts.

Before starting, decide how you want your scrapbook to look and feel. Do you like to tell a story in a chronological order or would you rather focus on a single memory per page? These decisions will guide your entire creative process.

Once you’ve decided on a style, pick out some basic supplies and embellishments to work with. There’s no need to spend a lot of money; many cute supplies can be found at dollar stores and other discount retailers. For example, you can use buttons, glitter, sequins and dried flowers to decorate your layouts. There are also various stickers and die cuts that can be used to embellish your pages, along with brads, eyelets and other adhesives.

For pages that focus on a specific location, consider adding a map to your layout to help tell the broader story of your trip. Similarly, you can add brochures or travel tickets to your pages for additional visual interest.

When choosing photos, focus on the ones that are most meaningful to you and those with the best lighting and focus. If possible, choose photos with a matte finish instead of gloss as these are less prone to fingerprint smudges when you handle them.
