How to Start a Scrapbook

Often when looking back at family photos, we may wonder who those people are in the picture or what happened that day. Scrapbooking allows us to organize and record these moments, keeping them in one place where they can be easily accessed. It also gives us an opportunity to add other elements that help tell the story such as mementos, tickets, and cards.

The first step to starting a scrapbook is to decide what you want to record and what style of scrapbook you prefer. You can choose a traditional scrapbook where you work with paper, stickers, and embellishments, or you can make a digital scrapbook on a computer. Both styles of scrapbooking can be equally as beautiful, so the choice is up to you.

Once you have your supplies, it’s time to start assembling your page. It’s helpful to have a photo, a list of dates or events, and any mementos you want to record. It’s also a good idea to write captions and journal entries on separate pieces of paper before adding them to the page. This will give you an opportunity to refine your writing and catch any typos.

Another fun way to embellish your pages is by using ribbon mounts. These are a great option for archiving delicate items like Polaroid photographs, historical documents, and recipe cards. They’re easy to make: just cut a three-inch strip of grosgrain ribbon, fold the ends down, and use acid-free tape or glue to secure them.
