The Basics of Scrapbooking

Scrapbooking is a personal hobby that requires the use of various paper crafts, stickers, patterned papers, cardstock, washi tapes, wood veneers, stamps and other embellishments. This art of storytelling is a perfect hobby for people who enjoy making handmade things and want to preserve their memories in the form of an album. Some people even prefer traditional scrapbooking over the online environment of digital spaces as it gives them a chance to pass down these albums to future generations.

The first step of creating a scrapbook is to select the photos and memorabilia that you would like to include. Make sure that the photos and memorabilia are related to the theme of the scrapbook. Organize the items and place them in labeled folders or envelopes to keep them safe.

Next, decide whether you will hand-write or type the text for each page. It’s a good idea to write the main text for each page by hand as it may be more personal, but some prefer typing or printing the words on a computer and then pasting them onto the page. If you plan to use an adhesive, choose one that is acid-free so that it will not damage the photos and memorabilia over time.

If you are working with a specific theme, it is also a good idea to create a layout design for the entire album in advance. This will save you time when creating each page, help you to use your supplies more fully and give your book a unified look.
