The Basics of Scrapbooking

Scrapbooking is an art and craft that allows people to document their memories and stories in a creative way. This is a very therapeutic and relaxing hobby that also requires artistic skill and creativity to create a beautiful finished product.

The first step in starting a scrapbook is to choose a theme. This can be an overall theme for the album or even a specific event or occasion that you would like to scrapbook about. Once you have a theme in mind it is time to begin gathering your supplies and getting ready to start creating.

Most scrappers use a variety of materials to create their masterpieces. Basic supplies include background paper (white, cream, black or kraft), photo corner mounts and adhesive dots, scissors, a paper trimmer and cutting tool, acid-free glues, a coordinating journaling pen for writing notes and a few embellishments to add interest. For more advanced designs, die cut templates, rubber stamps, stencils, inking tools and heat embossing tools are popular.

Many scrappers choose to mat their photos to help them stand out on the page and add a pretty border around them. Matting can be done using cardstock, patterned paper or fabric. It’s important that whatever materials are used they are archival safe.

Most modern scrapbooks are created in 12-inch-by-12-inch albums with a clear cover to protect the photos. Mini albums are also becoming popular with a smaller, more portable size that makes it easier to store and transport.
