The Basics of Scrapbooking

Scrapbooking is the art of creating an album with photographs, mementos and other decorative elements. The album also contains captions and other journaling that explain or accent the photos. Scrapbooks are used to document events, vacations, school activities, family history and other significant experiences.

Before starting a scrapbook, choose an album with clear or opaque pages that will accommodate the size and number of photos and other mementos you wish to include on each page. There are many different formats, but 12″x12″ and 8.5″x11″ are the most common. The album can be hardbound or soft-cover, and it may have a slip-in or fold-out format.

Once you have the materials needed, think about the stories you want to tell and how they might be organized in a page layout. You may decide to organize the stories by event, milestone or theme.

Select the photos you want to use, removing any that are blurry or have blinking people. If you have a lot of pictures to work with, consider trimming them down (cropping) or using a collage technique.

Manipulating photos, papers and other embellishments helps with motor skills and hand-eye coordination. As you cut and assemble small parts to create a design, the brain releases dopamine, helping with feelings of happiness, satisfaction and accomplishment. The result is a meaningful keepsake of special memories. You will be able to look back on the memories in the future, and those who see your scrapbooks will know how much time and love went into them.
