What is Scrapbooking?

scrapbooking

Scrapbooking is a way to preserve memorabilia and create a journal of memories. It is a popular pastime with many different styles and materials. It can be done by individuals, families or groups. It can be a fun, social and therapeutic activity for people of all ages.

Basic supplies include background papers (like printed or cardstock paper), photo mats (or other means of mounting photos such as adhesive dots, photo mounting tape or acid-free glue) and a variety of embellishments. Tools like a paper trimmer, scissors and art pens (for writing or drawing) are also used. For more elaborate designs, die cut templates, rubber stamps, stencils, inking tools and heat embossing tools are commonly used. Other supplies such as eyelet setters, paper punches and die cutting machines are occasionally used.

A scrapbook is usually organized into pages that tell a story and can be themed by event or occasion such as weddings, birthdays or holidays. It can be a way to record a child’s first year or an album of vacation adventures. Journaling is an important aspect of a scrapbook and can be handwritten, typed or printed on archival printer paper.

Scrapbooking has a long history and traces back to England in the 15th century when commonplace books and friendship albums were popular for collecting poems, recipes, quotes and personal diaries. In the 1800s, Mark Twain patented an album that contained self-pasting pages and included a place for photos and souvenirs.
