What is Scrapbooking?

Scrapbooking is a creative hobby where people put together a book of photos and other adornments to create an artistic way of preserving memories. This new-found interest has grown into a huge industry with many companies producing supplies to help create these books. People also use this craft to document their lives and socialize with others who enjoy this hobby. It has even spawned a spin-off called Project Life which offers a simpler and quicker version of the traditional style of scrapbooking.

Throughout history people have been using scrapbooks to preserve pictures, poetry, article clippings and other mementos. The modern practice of scrapbooking began in the late 1800s when people began to create informal photo albums that combined casual photographs with snippets of memorabilia such as ticket stubs and notes. People often used photo mounting corners and wrote notations on the backs of their photos such as who was in them or where and when they were taken. Mark Twain, a writer and inventor, carried a scrapbook with him on his travels to keep souvenirs and note important details from each day of his trip.

Today, scrapbooking is a popular pastime that has become a multi-billion dollar industry. Basic scrapbook supplies include photo-sized papers (both printed and cardstock paper), a variety of glues including adhesive dots, double-sided tape, liquid glue, or art pens and archival pens for journaling. Other important items are scissors, a paper trimmer or cutting tool and embellishments such as dimensional stickers, rub-ons, rubber stamps, stencils, inking tools and a personal die cut machine. Scrapbookers also have the option of adding a special finishing touch to their pages with the use of eyelet setters, sanding or heat embossing tools.
